David S. Smith serves life sciences companies and their investors with strategic guidance on intellectual property transactions, venture financings and regulatory matters.

David’s intellectual property-related work includes IP transactions, regulatory issues and licensing. He is an authority on the legal issues surrounding the use of human biological materials and frequently speaks at universities and trade conferences on commercial development of tissue, cell and stem cell technologies.

His corporate practice is concentrated in the organization, financing and growth of life sciences companies.

David is a founder and principal of Teregenics, LLC, a company formed in 2003 that provides strategic product development analysis and consulting services to institutional investors, research centers and companies participating in developing human tissue engineering and regeneration technologies.

David was senior vice president and general counsel of TissueInformatics.Inc, a bioinformatics company, until its merger with Icoria, Inc. Before that, he was of counsel at a large law firm and led the development of that firm’s biotechnology practice in Pittsburgh.

David is a former adjunct professor in Carnegie Mellon University’s Department of Engineering and Public Policy and member of the Scientific Advisory Board of Clinical Cell Culture, Ltd., a tissue engineering company listed on the Australian stock exchange. He has also served as a trustee of AMD3 Education and Research Foundation, which supports the development and clinical introduction of computer assisted and minimally invasive tools and techniques for orthopedic repairs.

David is active in a number of trade organizations and serves on the executive committee of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society. He is a past member of the board of directors of the Pennsylvania Biotechnology Association and secretary of the Pittsburgh Tissue Engineering Initiative.

David received his J.D. from American University, Washington College of Law, and his A.B. from Hamilton College. He is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania.
